Fallen Angels

Jack Vettriano

Fallen Angels

Alongside over forty Vettriano paintings are stories, poems, dialogue from plays, and other fine examples of Scottish writing. W Gordon Smith, playwright and art critic, has woven an anthology of new and old writing round the painter’s images, complementing them, matching their moods, extending the lives of his characters beyond their frozen moments on canvas.

Some of Scotland’s most accomplished writers have accepted the challenge to put their imagination into free fall and, by interpreting Vettriano’s paintings in such diverse ways, plunder some of their mysteries and perhaps go some way towards explaining their unique appeal.

This is a tattoo book like no other. Filled with jaw dropping portrait photography by Fredi Marcarini and reportage that makes you practically smell the ink by Chris Terry, this beautifully designed book focuses on the work of Mo Coppoletta and The Family Business based in London’s Exmouth Market.

Jack Vettriano is a client of Mo Coppoletta’s and the book features a sequence of photographs of Jack visiting the parlour, having a tattoo created by Mo and a final portrait shot of Jack with his new tattoo by Fredi Marcarini.

Jack Vettriano on the art of the tattoo:

“I’ve always been attracted to the retro appeal of tattoos. To me there’s something so romantic about the commitment a person makes in having the name of a loved one, a place or even an idea inscribed, forever, on their bodies. We literally where our hearts on our sleeves.

A tattoo is a poetic and artistic creation and a truly great tattoo can only be created by a true artist. It was a great privilege for me to have mine created by Mo, who is first of all an artist and then a master tattooist.

Wander into The Family Business and you have entered an artist’s studio; the walls adorned with drawings and paintings; memorabilia and found objects scattered around; the music playing only partially masking the incessant buzzing of the tattoo machines, a soundtrack that just adds to the experience. It’s a melting pot of creativity in there; sights, sounds and even smells all around you, stimulating all your senses but the moment you surrender to your artist, the experience becomes oddly private, calm and intimate between just the two of you. Choose your artist with care.

I think it was Jack London who once said, “Show me a man with a tattoo and I’ll show you a man with an interesting past.” and I love the idea that a tattoo can be hint or a clue to a story or the stories of a person’s life.”

Welcoming you into the Family, Mo invites you to step into his world whether you’re a first timer, an old timer or as he says, a serious collector. The prospect of tattoo feels less terrifying when surrounded by Mo’s artworks, religious iconography and David, the gel quiffed manager talking you through each of the look books. Accountants, nurses, musicians, artists and celebrities all flock to The Family Business and everyone is treated the same. You wait your turn like everyone else.

Tattooed… is as much an inspirational design source as a peek into the private world of the tattoo parlour, its artists and clients reflecting the status of the tattoo as a truly twenty first century art form.

With tattoo artworks and endless photographs of clients (including Maxim, Paloma Faith and Jack Vettriano) and the artists, Tattooed is a true reflection on life at The Family Business.

“If you want to succeed in tattooing, you need to breathe, eat, drink and smell tattooing.” Mo Coppoletta.

Mo Coppoletta is one of the world’s most respected tattoo artists. He established The Family Business Tattoo shop in 2003 in the heart of London with the aim of creating a new setting for tattoo enthusiasts, a shop with a different approach and a unique environment. The shop has built a strong following and is now internationally renowned for its high standards of creativity and talented artists.

Indy band’s music inspires Vettriano

Music has always been hugely important to Vettriano, with many of his paintings being inspired by or named after the songs he loves. When he found out that Scottish indy band, Saint Judes’ Infirmary, had written a song entitled ‘Goodbye Jack Vettriano’ he was flattered by the reference and then relieved that he loved the song.  He was approached by the band and agreed to go along to assist with the filming of a video for the song, commissioned for BBC Scotland’s, Music Show.

‘Goodbye Jack Vettriano’ featured on the band’s debut album, Happy Healthy Lucky Month and you can listen to this and other tracks from the album on our Press & Media page.

Vettriano was inspired by the lyrics in the song to produce a painting, ‘Marked Heart, featured far left here, which the band went on to use for the cover of their second album, ‘This Has Been the Death of Us’, which was released in 2009. Clicke HERE to read an article about the lyrics that inspired by the painting.

The collaboration on the new album evolved further when the band invited Vettriano and the writer and fellow Fifer, Ian Rankin, to record spoken words to be included in some of the new tracks. Click HERE to listen to the song, ‘Tacoma Radar’; lyrics by Ian Rankin and spoken by Jack Vettriano.

St Judes performed a gig at the National Scottish Portrait Gallery in 2009, to launch their second album ‘This Has Been The Death of Us’; see a video of their performance below.

Art for Aquila Auction

Vettriano triptych donated for Art For L’Aquila fundraising auction

Fredi Marcarini and Jack Vettriano have donated a set of their Artist’s Proofs of the triptych of photographs featured here to the Art for L’Aquila fundraising auction that takes place at the Italian Cultural Institute in London on 2nd July.

The Cultural Institute are hosting the exhibition from 29th June through to 2nd July and the auction itself will take place at 7pm and will be conducted by Bloomsbury Auctions.

The exhibition and auction will feature the work of a diverse set of young artists from Abruzzo alongside work by more established, international artists.

When approached to donate something to the auction, Vettriano commented:

“Like everyone, I was deeply saddened and shocked to see the devastation and misery caused by the earthquake in Abruzzo in April and in particular the appalling loss in L’Aquila.

I greatly admire the efforts made by the young, emerging artists of Abruzzo who have given their work to the Art for Aquila auction and I was particularly moved to hear they have asked for the funds raised to go towards the restoration of the dome of Santa Maria del Suffragio. I have always been stimulated by visual pleasures and I absolutely share these artists’ sentiment that everyone should have the chance to walk down the street and view something beautiful every day.

Fredi Marcarini is a great italian photographer who lives and works in Milan and I hope that our joint donation of the triptych of photographs on which we collaborated together last year, makes for a fitting contribution to next week’s auction.”

Fredi Marcarini commented:

“Art for art is a wonderful idea. Giving money is one thing, but the opportunity to use one’s art to bring back and restore art in l’Aquila, is something else.”
